Pre-monsoon building checklist for Bangalore.

Your complete checklist for preparing your building's water infrastructure before the rains hit.

Bangalore's monsoon season brings heavy rains that test every building's water infrastructure. Overflowing tanks, contaminated sumps, clogged drainage, and stagnant water are all preventable problems if you prepare in advance. Here's your complete pre-monsoon checklist.

1. Clean your water tanks

This is the most important step. Monsoon rainwater carries dust, debris, and pollutants from the atmosphere and your building's surface. If your overhead tanks are already dirty, the monsoon water mixing in makes contamination worse.

What to do:

  • Get all overhead tanks professionally cleaned before the monsoon
  • Check tank lids and covers for cracks that let rainwater in
  • Ensure overflow pipes are clear and properly directed

2. Clean and inspect your sump

During heavy rains, floodwater can seep into underground sumps through cracks, poorly sealed openings, or backflow from drainage. A clean sump with proper sealing is your first defence against contaminated water entering your supply.

What to do:

  • Get your sump professionally cleaned and dewatered
  • Check sump lid sealing and replace gaskets if worn
  • Inspect walls for cracks that could let floodwater in
  • Check the pump motor and float switch

3. Clear drainage and gutters

Blocked drainage is the number one cause of waterlogging around buildings during the monsoon. Leaves, debris, and construction waste accumulate in drains and gutters throughout the year. One heavy rain can overwhelm a clogged system.

What to do:

  • Clear all roof gutters and downpipes
  • Flush building drainage with a hose to check flow
  • Check basement drainage pumps are operational
  • Clear storm drains around the building perimeter

4. Check your pool (if applicable)

Monsoon rains dilute pool chemicals and introduce contaminants. Heavy rainfall can dramatically shift pH and chlorine levels in a matter of hours. Without preparation, you'll be fighting algae blooms and cloudy water all season.

What to do:

  • Schedule a deep clean before the monsoon starts
  • Stock up on chlorine and pH adjusters
  • Consider a pool cover for periods of heavy rain
  • Ensure your overflow drain is functional

5. Check for mosquito breeding spots

The monsoon is peak dengue and malaria season in Bangalore. Standing water anywhere in your building is a potential breeding ground. Tank lids with gaps, open sumps, blocked drains, and unused water features all become risks.

Walk around your property and identify any spot where water could collect and stagnate. Fix it before the rains start. Clean tanks and sumps with sealed lids are your best prevention.

The quick version

3

Clear all drainage, gutters, and downpipes

4

Service swimming pool and stock chemicals

5

Eliminate all standing water and mosquito breeding spots

6

Check pump motors, float switches, and electrical connections

The monsoon hits Bangalore every year without fail. The buildings that have zero problems during the rains are the ones that prepared. A couple of hours of preventive maintenance now saves weeks of dealing with contaminated water, waterlogging, and emergency repairs later.
